U2 also dazzled as they beamed in live from the Las Vegas Sphere
Annie Lennox, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman performed ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at the Grammy Awards last night in tribute to Sinead O’Connor and at the end shouted “Artists for ceasefire! Peace in the world.”
While she was singing, a roll-call of the other musical stars we lost last year - among them Shane MacGowan, Mary Weiss, Jane Birkin, Wayne Kramer, Jim Ladd, Andy Rourke, David Lindley, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Trugoy the Dove, Randy Meisner, Charlie Robison, Michael Rhodes, Gary Rossington, Maria Jimenez, Melinda Wilson and Gary Wright - appeared on the video screen behind her.
The tributes didn’t end there with Stevie Wonder taking to the stage in honour of the aforementioned Tony Bennett and Jon Batiste honouring the man known as the Godfather of Black Music, Clarence Avant.
There were further live performances from Billie Eilish, Billy Joel, Burna Boy, Dua Lipa, Joni Mitchell, Tracey Chapman and Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Travis Scott, and U2 who, redolent of those old Zoo TV transmissions, beamed in live from the Las Vegas Sphere with a rousing rendition of ‘Atomic City’.
Introducing Bono and the chaps, host Trevor Noah noted: "We are leaving Los Angeles for a moment and going to Las Vegas for the venue that everybody has been talking about this past year. Remember, no television cameras have ever been allowed inside until right now."

Bono ended by introducing the Best Pop Vocal Album category, which was won by Taylor Swift’s Midnights.
Swift also picked up overall Album of the Year for a fourth time with Midnights.
“All I want to do is keep being able to do this,” she reflected. “I love it so much. It makes me so happy. It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes so many people happy who voted for this award too. All I want to do is keep doing this. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much. Mind blown, thank you so much!"
The Taylor excitement didn’t end there Swift announcing that her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, will be with us on April 19.
Also getting to give acceptance speeches were Miley Cyrus whose Flowers was Record of the Year; Best New Artist Victoria Monet; Billie Eilish whose ‘What Was I Made For?’ was Song of the Year; SZA whose ‘Snooze’ was R&B Song of the Year and also bagged Best Progressive R&B Album with SOS; Kylie Minogue whose ‘Padam Padam’ was Best Pop Dance Recording; Killer Mike who won Best Rap Album with Michael; boygenius whose The Record walked away with Best Alternative Music Album; Paramore who won Best Rock Album with This Is Why; and Metallica whose 72 Seasons was adjudged to be Best Metal Performance.
