"To those still hurting from the way things were, I can only empathise and offer a prayer," said Peter Edward Clarke. "I present my mistakes that I may learn and others may avoid."
Peter Edward Clarke, also known as Budgie, former drummer of Siouxsie and the Banshees, has announced an upcoming memoir.
The Absence: The Memoirs of a Banshee Drummer will detail the musician’s experience of the post-punk scene of the late 1970s to early 1980s. During this time, he performed with The Slits, Big in Japan, and the Banshees.
It will also explore his marriage, and subsequent divorce, to bandmate Siouxsie Sioux. The two married in 1991, staying together for sixteen years until their separation was announced in 2007.
“Damned if you do, denied if you don’t,” Clarke said in a press release. “To remember, revisit and to write, was traumatic and cathartic.”
“I prepared my apologies and anticipated rejection,” he continued. “I received mostly love, understanding, and affection.”
Following his divorce from Sioux, and the breakup of The Creatures - who the two performed with the time - Clarke continued to play for a variety of acts.

In 2009 he toured with Juno Reactor, joined Efterklang for their 2012 worldwide tour, recorded drums for John Grant’s album Grey Tickles, Black Pressure in 2015, and more.
Most recently, Clarke has been working with The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst and Irish music producer Jacknife Lee. They released the album Los Angeles in 2023, featuring U2’s The Edge, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, and Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock.
Clarke and Tolhurst have continued working together, touring the US last year.
The Absence: The Memoirs of a Banshee Drummer is set to release this June, published by White Rabbit.
