MERCURY REV: "Something For Joey" (Beggar's Banquet)
MERCURY REV: "Something For Joey" (Beggar's Banquet)
Mercury Rev sprawl. When just about everyone else plays the sound-bite game, these Buffalo persons add where others subtract. Normally this would lead to the most overgrown indulgence, a garden of weeds and whimsy, cheap jokes, student inanity and technical overkill of the most redundant variety. Instead Mercury Rev are part of that American experimental tradition which apply the pure science of the outer limits of "Jazz" and "Classical" music to create the nuttiest tastiest "rock".

I put on "Something For Joey"; blackbirds are pecking for worms in the garden (that's the flute and acoustic guitar bit), the dog is barking at its canine neighbours and a thunderstorm's approaching (that's the electric storm guitar part) and I really believe they made this song for me.
