In our continued coverage of Songs From An Empty Room, we chatted with Aimée about her new music and the importance of mental health maintenance in the music industry.
Rising pop artist Aimée is releasing her brand new single, 'Naked', today. "We asked fans to get involved with this one and I think it’s really special and all shot during lockdown. I honestly am so proud of it," she says of the video, which is set to drop on Monday.
Most recently, Aimée has been spinning the Irish Women in Harmony cover of 'Dreams'. She took part in that single as well. "This is super cheeky," she laughs. " But it’s just so bloody powerful and inspiring! We have not only created a track that has reached number 1 ... but we have created a community!"
In the interim, Aimée is set to play a few songs at The Olympia in Dublin as part of Songs From An Empty Room. "I’m just taking it each week at a time as the future is so unknown with everything going on," she admits. But she's also incredibly excited for her socially distanced gig. "My favourite show that I have ever seen in The Olympia was probably Bruno Mars. I performed on The Olympia stage myself, doing panto when I was younger with Jedward. I only got to sing 1 or 2 lines because I was new ... I remember the feeling of wanting to just keep singing! I always said some day I would come back and sing by myself... here we are!"
Aimée has been sorely missing performing for live audiences. "There is no feeling in the world like hearing a crowd of people cheer for you or sing the words of your songs," she reminisces. "When you write music in a studio you kind of forget that other people will hear the music you're making. So to hear people singing back the words you wrote is such a surreal feeling."
The Songs From An Empty Room gig aims to support Irish crew and technicians, and is also in aid of Minding Creative Minds. Mental health is an issue close to Aimée's heart, so she jumped at the chance to participate in this gig. "It is such a massive part of all of our lives. We all have brains. We all have our own struggles," she remarks.
"It should be taken just as serious as our physical health. I think a lot of people’s mental health has been really tested in lockdown, as we have been forced to stay away from life’s normal distractions and spend more time with ourselves! This is why I felt for my new music video that’s coming out, it was important to highlight this. We don’t feel ourselves right now. Life feels weird. I thought: instead of creating a video trying to show “perfection” why not show the beauty in vulnerability and honesty?"
