As part of our Now We're Talking special issue, we share songs from artists who have talked - or sung - through their mental health issues and shared their burdens.
One of the greatest songs of the ‘70s, in ‘The Bottle’, Gil Scott-Heron took a panoramic look at the struggles of inner-city life, and in particular those who had succumbed to the fatal lure of alcoholism: “He done quit his 9 to 5 / He drink full-time and now he’s living in a bottle”. Despite the harsh realities depicted in the song, the irresistible funk groove meant it struck a defiant – and even celebratory – tone.
