As part of our Now We're Talking special issue, we share songs from artists who have talking - sung - through their mental health issues and shared their burdens.
Written in the aftermath of a painful break-up with the father of her child, on ‘Cranes In The Sky’ – an ethereal R&B number – Solange used the construction boom in Miami as a metaphor for ignoring what’s directly in front of us (“Sometimes I don’t wanna feel those metal clouds”). Elsewhere, she sings of the various ways she tried to overcome emotional pain (“I tried to work it away / But that just made me even sadder”). Whilst the sense of turmoil is palpable, the soulful and uplifting music hints at better times on the horizon.
