The band's UK, European and Japanese tour dates are set to begin in June.
Sparks have released ‘JanSport Backpack’, the second single off their upcoming album MAD!, out May 23.
Composed by brothers Ron and Russel Mael, the upbeat pop song addresses a declining relationship, with the love-interest’s backpack serving as a final reminder of loss. Taking inspiration from synthpop and new wave, Sparks released their lead single ‘Do Things My Own Way’ back in January. They also announced UK, European and Japanese tour dates set to begin in June.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, they first performed under the names Urban Renewal Project and Halfnelson, before deciding on Sparks. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1971, and were signed by Bob Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman. They earned acclaim for their 1974 single ‘This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' after relocating to London.
In recent years, the duo has released the 2021 film-musical Annette, which won Best Director for Leos Carax and Best Original Score for the Mael’s at the César Awards. That same year, they appeared in The Sparks Brothers, a documentary-musical following the group's life and legacy.
“All pop music is re-arranged Sparks. That’s the truth,” said producer Jack Antonoff in the film’s trailer.
