Spinning In The Name Of....Dubzeno
We talk to Dubzeno about his background and influences.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Dublin, and grew up between London and Dublin.
How would you describe your musical style?
It’s distinctive and unlike anybody else, I think.
How did you start making music?
When I attended the Bugsy Malone concert in Dublin, I was motivated to start making music – I didn’t know Ireland had a following for that style of music.
Who most influenced your style?
People I grew up listening to in London… Potter Payper, KB, Giggs and Ambush. My favourite musician is Maverick Sabre.
What do you think of the hip-hop scene in Ireland?
There is major room for national and international growth. I’m thankful for that, because I’ll be part of history in making the Irish hip-hop scene internationally recognised.
How did you come up with your name?
I wanted to come up with an Instagram name that only my friends and family would know. My mate Tommy who lived in the UK used to call me Dubz, and because I’m from Dublin and [my] name is Deano, he put them together and came up with Dubzeno. Tommy passed away so I kept the name.
What are the main inspirations for your lyrics?
The inspiration is real life. I don’t want to glamorise gangs, violence or use lyrics about a life I haven’t lived. I want people to be able to relate to me.
Who do you want to work with in the future?
Definitely have to do something with Maverick Sabre, Potter Payper and Ambush.
