Despite being nominated for 12 Tony Awards, the 'Spongebob Squarepants' musical has not found its feet on the Broadway scene.
Creators of the show have announced that the production will close on September 16 after a performance run that spanned a year.
Many people were skeptical when the musical was originally announced, however, the show ended up becoming critically acclaimed, snatching up a Tony award for 'Best Scenic Design'.
Producers have said the show was forced to end after plans to revamp the Palace Theatre were introduced. However, the show has also appeared to have suffered financially, with the theatre struggling to cover production costs.

However, fans of the show needn't worry, as plans to bring the show on tour are being developed. The tour is expected to commence in the fall of 2019 across the United States.
The show was directed by Tina Landau and had an ensemble of famous song writers make up the original score, such as Cyndi Lauper, Lady Antebellum, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T's, T.I, The Flaming Lips and They Might Be Giants.
