'My People' is the first episode from TradFest's upcoming Talking Trad podcast series.
TradFest launch the first episode in their new Talking Trad podcast series tomorrow, July 14 – with each instalment set to "delve into the rich and often overlooked contributions of marginalised groups to the flourishing Irish music tradition and scene." The first episode in the three-part series is hosted by Dublin-raised, Clare-based singer-songwriter Steo Wall, and shines a spotlight on the rich musical heritage of Irish Travellers.
As part of the episode, Steo will explore the crucial role played by Travellers across the decades in developing and preserving Irish traditional music. He'll be joined by special guests Christy Moore, former Hot Press cover star Sharyn Ward, and young Galway artist PJ Mongan. Tommy Fagan and Oliver O'Connell are also set to feature.
The episode, 'My People', takes its name from one of Steo's singles – the video for which premiered on hotpress.com back in 2020.
"'My People is a genuine folk song paying homage to all that have gone before me," he said of the song at the time. "These are a small few of the people who, not only carried the flame for Travelling people, but also Irish folk music and culture. They inspired generations after them, me included. I don't know if it comes across on the track, but my voice was trembling with emotion while recording this song. It genuinely felt like I was standing on the shoulders of giants."
The release of the episode also coincides with the final day of Traveller Pride Week 2023, which this year placed a particular emphasis on celebrating "Traveller Change-Makers."
