Having just released a new album, former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus is taking his solo show to Dublin, performing at Whelan's on September 14th.
A legend of American indie-rock, Stephen Malkmus' diverse output with Pavement, The Jicks and as a solo artist has been characterized by an inventive spirit and playful sonic textures. While he may be most well-known for lo-fi rock, Malkmus' newest solo album Groove Denied, which was released March 15th via Domino, finds inspiration in the Berlin club scene and techno music.
Instead of a human-powered rhythm section, the album was made using Ableton Live and drum machines, in addition to plug-in FX and "soft synths". Making use of new technological tools, Malkmus compared his songwriting process on Groove Denied to his kids playing dress-up games on his iPhone: "choosing hair color, dresses, etc. That intuitive swipe and grab thing. Chop and move the waves. Apple computer scroll style of thinking."
Stephen Malkmus will be performing at Whelan's on Thursday, September 14th, 2019. Tickets cost €30.00 and go on sale this Friday, March 22nd at 9am.
Groove Denied is available now for purchase and streaming on Spotify and Apple Music.
