In a recent interview with Hot Press, Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones shared memories of supporting David Bowie on his A Reality Tour, the North American run from 2003 to 2004 that would ultimately become Bowie’s final tour.
Reflecting on the experience, Jones admits he wasn’t a devoted Bowie fan before joining him on the road.
"It was incredible," Kelly confirms. "None of my brothers were playing Bowie records. So when Tony, our keyboard player from Manchester, introduced me to Bowie before that tour, I wasn't starstruck, because I wasn't really a huge fan at the time. I really got into Hunky Dory on that tour.
Jones also recalled working on a short story during the tour, naming two characters Hunky and Dory, a nod to Bowie’s 1971 album. “He would read my screenplay treatments and give me notes,” he shared.
The singer also recalled how Bowie would adjust his setlist depending on where they were in the U.S. "On the east coast, he'd be playing Trent Reznor songs, and when he'd be get into Middle America, he'd be whacking on 'Let's Dance'. It was great to watch him carving out parts of his dialogue to appeal to different parts of an audience across America, incredibly interesting."
