The rising Cavan band's infectious take on 'You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover' will soundtrack Shoot To Thrill winner Scott Altman's new movie promo for the magazine.
Already seen by band and fans alike as their ebullient 'theme tune', The Strypes' immensely popular take on Bo Diddley's 'You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover' will soon be hitting a cinema near you.
The tune was chosen to soundtrack a brand new Hot Press cinema ad, made by the rising young Irish director Scott Altman. You can catch it on Carlton Screen Advertising screens in cinemas across Ireland over the coming months.
"The Strypes are a really remarkable success story," Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. "For a band that are still in their teens to have blasted out of Cavan and made such an impression with their first album is amazing. They are hugely talented. But they also reflect the fact that there is an amazing wealth of brilliant young rock 'n' roll bands here in Ireland right now. Hot Press has always championed Irish music and so the hook-up for Scott's ad makes total sense."
Scott Altman, the man behind the ad, is a London-based director who has worked for MTV and recently aided Nick Knight on the VFX for Kanye West's 'BLKKK SKKKN HEAD' music video.
"As a director, it was great to have an almost endless array of classic and intriguing Hot Press covers to work with – from the early Rory Gallagher, Bob Marley, Springsteen and Bowie images right through to today's cover stars like Azealia Banks, Bressie, Katie Taylor, The Killers and The Strypes," said Scott Altman."Added to that, the soundtrack to the ad (The Strypes' 'You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover), played a fantastic role in bringing it all together."
It is just one of two brilliant new cinema ads which were chosen as the winners of the Shoot To Thrill competition, run by Hot Press and Carlton Screen Advertising. The second ad was directed by Matthieu Chardon, a young Frenchman who is currently living in Dublin.

"The Hot Press brand is truly a 'lovemark'. It's an Irish institution that reaches people's hearts and minds both here and internationally – I was in France recently and I was telling some friends that I was doing an ad for Hot Press and they said 'wow, that's cool, Hot Press is amazing'," Chardon said.
The two winners were picked by an illustrious panel of judges – director Lenny Abrahamson, McCann Erickson MD Orlaith Blaney, Galway Film Fleadh MD Miriam Allen, Carlton Screen Advertising GM Eoin Wrixon, Windmill Lane Pictures Creative Director Ian Jacobs and Niall Stokes.
"Scott Altman and Matthieu Chardon are brilliant directors and they have produced two ads of which they – and we – can be hugely proud," Niall Stokes added. "They say different but complementary things about Hot Press, and will be running in parallel on screens nationwide. Cinema is such a great medium, which is so important to our audience, making this is a wonderful link-up for Hot Press.”
The ads are being shown on the Carlton Screen Advertising network of screens across Ireland.
“We have really enjoyed being involved in the competition,” Eoin Wrixon, general manager of Carlton Screen Advertising said. “It has produced two ads of outstanding quality which reinforce what we already know: that cinema is a great medium for advertisers. We’re really happy with the result, that the combination of an iconic Irish brand – Hot Press – and some hugely exciting creative has produced two ads that are going to look really great in cinema.’’
