Studio 54 [Obsessive]
Aaaahh, Studio 54. The most talked about nightclub in history. And like so many of today’s bigger nightclubs, people talked about the drugs, the crowd, the guest list and then more drugs. But, like so many of today’s bigger nightclubs, how often do you hear people talking about the music? Well, here’s one of NYC’s original DJs, Kenny Carpenter, with what looks like a pretty definitive soundtrack to ‘the legend’. 13 tracks (actually, they were called songs back then) of disco, funk and electro that pretty much make up the blueprint for what we dance today. There’s a couple of obvious inclusions (Loletta Holloway’s ‘Love Senstaion’, D-Train’s ‘You’re The One For Me) and a shedload of undergound classics: Sparque’s ‘Lets Go Dancin’’, MFSB’s ‘Mysteries of the World’ and Evelyn King’s ‘I’m In Love’. The Clash even get their foot in the door with ‘The Magnificent Dance’. All superbly mixed in an oh-so-rough retro manner by Mr Carpenter. Ignore the coked-up disco wafflings and investigate this for a history lesson you’ll actually enjoy.
