Capaldi pulled out of multiple festivals this summer for health reasons.
The 1975 gave Lewis Capaldi a shoutout at their Reading festival set on Saturday. The group replaced the Scottish singer who pulled out of the festival for health reasons.
“Well, first of all can we have the loudest round of applause in our set for Mr Lewis Capaldi who couldn’t make it tonight,” said frontman Matty Healy to the crowd.
Capaldi announced he would be taking a break from live performances- including this weekend’s Electric Picnic- to focus on his mental and physical wellbeing.
Also during the set, in intro to their song, ‘It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You’, The 1975 played their usual gag where Healy goes to say something controversial before getting cut off by his bandmates.
This time the frontman poked fun of the fact that he didn’t have anything controversial prepared to say.

“I don’t have a racist joke ready” he said, before the band began playing the opening of the track.

The 1975 have been in legal hot water recently, following an incident at Malaysia’s Good Vibes music festival earlier this summer.
Last month in Kuala Lumpur frontman Matt Healy criticised the Malaysian government’s anti-LGBTQ stance before kissing band member Ross McDonald on the lips, leading to the set, and subsequently the festival being cut short.
The group were ordered to pay approximately $2.6 million in damages to festival organisers following their actions.
Matt Healy and co. recently wowed Dublin's St. Anne's Park in June. Read the full Hot Press live report here.
