Solid offering from English Indie-pop duo...
The fourth album from English indie-pop duo Pete Hobbs and Jof Owen is another collection of quirky, confessional art-pop of the sort you might find soundtracking Grey’s Anatomy (quite literally – the chaps’ tune ‘The First Snowflake’ has been used in the show).
Hobbs and Owens have added some interesting elements to the mix on The Great Perhaps, making for an enjoyable if not exactly groundbreaking listen. Opener ‘I Keep Falling In Love With You’ skillfully weaves vintage arcade sounds into the electro-pop fabric, whilst ‘Even Jesus Couldn’t Mend My Broken Heart’ fashions an entire song out of classic video game noises, making for a style perhaps best described as ‘8-bit pop’.
Soundtrack compilers of US TV shows may find themselves gravitating towards the likes of ‘My Little Heart That Remembers Everything’ and ‘It Could Have Been Me’.
As you can tell from the song titles, The Boy Least Likely To stick to the tried and trusted lyrical terrain of heartbreak and relationship difficulties, and at times the record is a little too twee. Still, fans of emotionally-charged indie-pop will have precious little to complain about.
