The Celtic Connection: An Irish Collection
As an introduction for those unfamiliar with the music, it’s not half bad, with veterans Seán Keane and Charlie Lennon coexisting comfortably with young turks Slide and lesser-known artists like Mary Staunton, Céide and Irish-American singer Cathie Ryan.
This compilation brings together tracks by a rather diverse lineup of artists, the common thread being that they’ve all taken part in tours organised by Austrian agent Dietmar Haslinger. As an introduction for those unfamiliar with the music, it’s not half bad, with veterans Seán Keane and Charlie Lennon coexisting comfortably with young turks Slide and lesser-known artists like Mary Staunton, Céide and Irish-American singer Cathie Ryan. Highlights include live concert tracks from Feenish and Karan Casey, Laoise Kelly’s unusual low-octave harp solo on a Bumblebees number, and a terrific piece by the relatively new Mayo-based band Gráda. Entitled ‘Snow Leopard’, it’s certain to generate well-deserved sales for the group’s debut album Endeavour.
