Charlatans' comeback record a soulful affair
When The Charlatans entered the studio to record Modern Nature, they had one simple goal: to write songs which would make them happy. Still reeling from the death of drummer Jon Brookes in 2013, one of English indie’s most enduring and entertaining acts wanted to create something positive from their collective pain – and their first LP in five years certainly achieves that aim. Enlisting the help of sticksmen for New Order, The Verve and Factory Floor along the way, the opus is a sweet, 70s era soul-inspired collection of sombre songs.
However smooth and contemplative, the album’s “Curtis Mayfield put through Tim Burgess’ blender” vibe will divide many. While there’s no doubting that the brass-infused, gospel choir featuring ‘Come Home Baby’ is a beautiful track, much of the material lacks that fizz of past glories like ‘One To Another’ and at times Modern Nature gets a little samey. On the upside, Burgess’ unmistakable croon is wonderful (‘Emilie’) and the string section on ‘Keep Enough’ is a joy to hear.
