The Canadian bluegrass quartet announce their fourth album Chains & Stakes, due February 2024, as the band prepares to kick off their UK and Irish tour this Friday in Camden, London.
Formed in quiet Saskatchewan in 2012, Canadian grassroots group The Dead South have acquired a loyal fan base over the years, with three albums and an EP under their belt. Now, the bluegrass quartet announce their fourth studio album Chains & Stakes, due for release February 9, 2024 via Six Shooter Records.
Watch the album trailer for Chains & Stakes here. The release announcement arrives alongside The Dead South’s new single, ‘Tiny Wooden Box,’ out now with an accompanying music video.
The band kicks off their UK Tour on Friday, October 27 with a sold-out Roundhouse show in Camden, London. The tour includes two, already sold-out Irish dates in Ulster Hall, Belfast and Dublin’s Vicar Street on November 1 and 2.
Arriving at the cusp of global success, it doesn’t matter what you label The Dead South. Call it progressive bluegrass, alternative Americana, country, folk or western – what matters is their music, which crosses categorisations and remains beloved by ages, nationalities and varied crowds around the world.

The band’s fourth studio album is a testament to their ever-growing assurance and adventurous sound. Chains & Stakes is the product of the band’s collaboration with Sugar & Joy producer Jimmy Nutt at Panoram Studios in Mexico City, where the team convened to record the 13-track album of “plot twists, family trees, grudges, insurance scams, bacon, burials, banjo riffs and more.”
With a balance of darkness and light that has come closest to defining the band’s distinct sound, Chains & Stakes is a true Dead South masterpiece.
The band’s tour promises to be a hit, as always; The Dead South’s fans are loyal to the band, known for attending concerts in cosplay attire copying the Dead South’s signature looks. Good Company, as the fans call themselves, is made up of a united, global community of dissimilar people whose vastly different backgrounds and views don’t prevent them from standing as one at Dead South gigs.
It’s sure to be a busy 2024 for the Canadian band. Following their UK tour, The Dead South hit the road in the USA in Spring of next year, returning to Europe with a Berlin date at the start of next summer.
