A LOOK BACK ON HOLMER’S ODYSSEY
From Belfast club DJ to Hollywood soundtrack guru, it’s been a hell of a trip for David Holmes since he first came to prominence in the mid ’90s. It’s little surprise that Holmes ended up becoming a man sought out by A-list directors such as Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher, since there is a strong cinematic atmosphere to most of his work, as shown on this compelling, career-spanning retrospective.
Whether it be the psych-funk of ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ (a previously unreleased track), the Krautrock motorik groove of ‘I Heard Wonders’ or the bluesy lament of ‘Sugarman‘, the producer’s compositions are tailor-made for the silver screen. Elsewhere, Holmer goes into ambient mode for the gorgeous ‘Lisa Says’, explores Suicide-style electro freakiness on ‘Living Room’ and delivers a sublime soul track with the Massive Attack-style ‘Gone’.
Oh, and dancefloor aficionados need not fear – the classic groove sensations ‘69 Police’, ‘Gritty Shaker’ and ‘My Mate Paul’ are all present and correct. And as an added bonus, you can also get a second disc featuring remixes from such top drawer talents as Andrew Weatherall, Mogwai and the godlike Kevin Shields.
