News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer.
You would think the residents of the north had enough to be excited about following their magnificent victory at Windsor Park but no…..following hot on the heels of that sporting triumph come two musical ones in the form of new albums from Tracer AMC and The Evangelists.
Tracer AMC follow up the success of 2004’s debut Flux And Form with the release of Islands on the We Love Records label.
Recorded between September 2004 and June 2005, Islands features 10 tracks including live favourite 'Paper Machete' and the epic 14 minute album closer 'You Follow The Snow And Are Wasted'.
Glockenspiels, violins and subtle electronics create a rich, multi-layered opus that is truly deserving of a place in the CD collections of the nation. The band follow the release with a gig for the Donna Legge show on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday October 13.
Muff Against Bush is the cheeky debut offering from The Evangelists available from local record shops nationwide. There will be live action to support the release so check hotpress.com for dates.
Fellow northerners Panda Kopanda visit the Lower Deck in Portobello, Dublin for the 45th Ballroom Of Romance. Other guests on the night include Jape, Groom (presently recording a new album) and The Shells (featuring the talents of ex-Mexican Pet Pat Clafferty).
The Lower Deck also plays host to the Michael Knight album launch on September 23. The debut Youth Is Wasted On The Young includes the fine 'Foals' single released earlier this year. Guesting with them on the night are Stanley Super 800 and Patrick Freyne and his Bad Intentions.
Another long-player making its first appearance on that day is the second offering from The Maladies. A Whole Bunch of Rivers was produced by Mudd Wallace of Therapy? and Watercress fame and features 10 brand new tracks. The launch takes place the next night in Whelans when the band will be ably supported by Groom and Kieron Black.
In other news from The Pale Mitch have just released their new single 'Breathe' . The band, which hails from the northside of the city, is the pet project of Eamon Mitchell. You may remember Eamon from his days in 90s luminaries The Conspiracy and Babylon The Bride.
Following their recent support slot to The Revs in Dundalk, The Beat Poets will be previewing some new material in the Voodoo Lounge on September 28.
Long Lost Brother have just completed recording their second single which has been produced by former Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell. The band are said to be very happy with the results – we will, of course, keep you posted.
Bon voyage to singer songwriter Ciaran Flynn who is to depart these shores for New York, where he will play a brace of gigs over the next month before returning to play his usual haunts. In the meantime, his ‘Stay The Night’ single is available to download from www.fono.ie.
And finally in important date for your diary news….a collection of fine domestic talent has come together to organise a John Peel Tribute Night on Thursday October 13 in The Hub. All money raised will go to charity. Playing on the night are House of Mexico, Luggage, Hey Paulette and Female Hercules.
