News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer.
Following the celebrations of Spraoi, the revelry continues in Waterford with news that local rockers Gorbachov have accepted a debut album deal with Liverpool-based Pirate Industries. The band plan to relocate to Merseyside at the start of 2007 and the remainder of this year will be spent recording.
In the meantime, get your mitts on the split-single combining their infectious ‘Beat Machine’ with Ilya K’s ‘Glass Eyes’ on the flip side, available nationwide.
On the subject of perfect combos, how’s this for a double-header? Mumblin’ Deaf Ro and Michael Knight play Bewley’s Café Theatre in Dublin on August 24 and tickets are a snip at a 10. Ro recently wrote a new single for Tom Dunning and Your Boyfriends called ‘Fed Up And Strange’, which was released in July of this year. He will shortly go into the studio to record his second album, The Herring And The Brine, due for a February 2007 release.
Following last year’s critically-acclaimed debut album Youth Is Wasted On The Young, Michael Knight have built up a loyal following and are currently recording the follow-up. We will keep you posted on developments.
Fellow Dubliners Reemo played a blistering show at the Sugar Club recently, ably supported by Ginseng and The Rails. The lads are currently toiling away in the studio, putting the finishing touches to their new single ‘Rushin Man’, which will be released in early September. They have also built a new online home, which you can now visit at www.reemo.ie.
Northern independent label Audio-ill will have its first showcase at The Bunker in Lavery’s on Wednesday August 16. The regular night kicks off with performances from Infidelity, Canizares and The Beat Poets. Any bands interested in playing future dates please visit www.audioill.com.
Another event worth noting is this year’s Larne Battle Of The Bands which takes place from August 21 to 24. Applications can be sent to Sarah at [email protected] or forms are available from the Larne Tourist Information Centre. (Maximum age for applicants is 21).
Over four days, a cinema screen in the town centre will show cult teen movies, music videos, horror flicks and dance films every night. Drumming workshops and break-dancing performances are also on the schedule!
And finally some welcome news from Fionn Regan, who returns with his debut album The End Of History on August 25 on the Heffa label. The release follows the critically-acclaimed Hotel Room EP. A national Irish tour should be announced shortly but in the meantime he will be wowing UK crowds supporting Juana Molina. Stay tuned for details!
