Another instalment in this highly successful monthly songwriters’ showcase, this was the first to be held in a brand new facility at the Holiday Inn. The Green Room is an impressive live space by any standards and offers every possible creature comfort, matched with superb sound and a warm, lively atmosphere.
Kicking off tonight’s proceedings was Dublin based songwriter Andrew Mann who performed a well-received set of memorable, hook-laden numbers. One song in particular, ‘These Days ’ stood out above the rest and with his pop star looks and a brilliant voice (not unlike that of Brian Kennedy) Mann looks set for greater things.
Another Dubliner, Alyanya Massey’s approach recalled the folk/jazz stylings of Joni Mitchell and more recent contenders such Erin McKeown. A graduate of Newpark Music school, her recent extensive touring with Luka Bloom has paid off; she comes across with a relaxed confidence in her material, the highlight being a poignant song inspired by the Omagh atrocity.
Australian native and Acoustic Junction stalwart Chiara Browne was more rock-oriented in approach – you could well imagine her fronting a feisty combo. With a bluesy voice in the Bonnie Raitt/Janis Joplin vein, great songs such as ‘Ray Charles’ and a strong stage presence, Browne has star quality in spades.
Special guest Eleanor McEvoy wrapped things up with a short but utterly compelling set which included a handful of familiar material – ‘Did you Tell Him’ from Snapshots and ‘Rain Falls’ from her most recent album Yola as well as a handful of new songs. A highly enjoyable and entertaining evening.
