Third instalment of collected material from Band singer/drummer’s celebrated shindigs.
This posthumous release of highlights from Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Sessions was cherry picked by the man himself, so it can be considered a swansong of sorts.
Spanning the years 2006-2010, the tracks feature a bevy of old-time favourites performed by elite musicians and a smattering of special guests: Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint and (Black Crowe) Chris Robinson. Vocal duties vary from track to track, with Helm himself featuring on four of the thirteen numbers but providing backing elsewhere.
From the swampy boogie-woogie of Muddy Waters’ ‘The Same Thing’, to the melodic canter of Carl Perkins’ ‘Turn Around’ via the upbeat bluesy-gospel rendition of Blind Willie Johnson’s ‘God Don’t Ever Change’ this is a journey through the music that shaped the man credited with co-creating modern Americana. His drumming throughout is flawless: nuanced, evocative, the heartbeat of the songs. No one can lay down a shuffle or groove like Levon! Case in point: ‘Ain’t That Good News’.
His ‘Rambles’ were renowned for their informal and intimate atmosphere. He saw them as an opportunity to welcome folk into his home and provide them with an unforgettable night’s entertainment. These performances exude this warmth and bravura.
Helm takes back the vocal reigns on final track ‘Take Me To The River’, a joyous, euphoric tour de force that features his most powerful delivery. A fitting finale.
