Last month Berninger released his debut solo record, Serpentine Prison, produced by the legendary Booker T. Jones.
The National frontman Matt Berninger has joined forces with Candian alt-pop songwriter Hannah Georges for an updated rendition of her track 'Pray It Away'.
The original solo version of the track appeared on Georgas’ recent album, All That Emotion, which was produced by fellow National member Aaron Dessner.
Georgas became connected to The National last year when she was brought on as part of their touring band in support of their 2019 album I Am Easy to Find.
Georgas and Berninger became good friends on the road, and decided to link up and record a duet version of 'Pray It Away'.
Berninger’s gravelly vocals give the song a rich definition and complements Georgas' softer sound.
Dessner co-wrote this song with Georgas, so The National are imbedded within the track in more ways than one.

In a press release, Georgas explained that the lyrics for 'Pray It Away' are about a troubling family issue her friend was dealing with:
“She told me over dinner one night that a family member didn’t want to attend her wedding because she was marrying a woman,” Georgas said.
“I wrote the song the next day using the chord progression from Aaron’s demo. It was upsetting to see my friend go through what she was dealing with at a time where she should have been celebrating.”
