"We're only the third Irish act to headline here," notes singer Danny O'Donoghue from the stadium. Their June show will mark 30 years – almost to the day – since U2's first Croke Park gig.
When Danny O'Donoghue invited Hot Press for a sneak preview of their album in July, we casually enquired if there were big plans for summer 2015. He said there were, but he couldn't really tell us too much.
While we're not the type to hold grudges, when The Script frontman spotted us in Croke Park this morning, he knew he had some explaining to do.
"This was it!" he laughed. "This was always on the cards, and this was the news I was holding out from you." Gesturing to the enormous crowd of journalists gathered, he added: "And you can see why!"
At this morning's press conference, the band spoke about supporting U2 at the same venue in 2009 and say that is where their ambitions to one day headline Croker stemmed from.
"We came off stage after that U2 gig thinking "one day this'll be ours'," says Danny. "It took us [five years], but here we are. We're only the third irish act to headline here."
Glen Power stated: "One of the reasons the announcement took so long is that we wanted to secure a guest that we really loved, and we've managed to get Mr Pharell Williams!
"I rang my mam to tell her we're playing Croke Park," O'Donoghue continues. "She told me my father used to come down here selling sandwiches outside the GAA, pushing them around in a pram. We all have ties to this place, from growing up here. Nothing tastes sweeter than an Irish show!"
