Here's the break-down, region by region, of the results of a new HMV classical music survey. While the results show that Mozart, Beethhoven and Bach are the most pupular, they also vary by region.
The results often seem to depend on the music played by local orchestras; in Scotland, for example, there appears to be a strong tradition of Russian music, with Tchaikovsky selling particularly well – perhaps due to the residence of Russian/Soviet conductors at two Scottish national orchestras.
In the North-West, Sir Edward Elgar’s association with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra ensures him a high profile in the region.
Another factor is music adopted by local football teams – the North-East favour Prokofiev, whose 'Romeo & Juliet' is played at Sunderland FC; Newcastle FC, on the other hand, have a passion for Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, which is often played during home games.
Historical and cultural factors are also influential, as well as migration trends, with the presence of a large Polish community in parts of East Anglia perhaps explaining the popularity of Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, who charts less high elsewhere.
Similarly, the Isle Of Wight and the Isle of man seem to prefer more traditional music like Beethoven and Vaughan Williams, while the tradition of song is strong in Wales, where opera sells well.
