This fortnight, Paul Nolan talks to Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat about his experiences working with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly, and later on the Thundercat track "Walk On By".
"I look at it like a conversation- me and Kendrick, we're having an open discussion. That's immediately what I took from what we did with that song. The lines of communication were wide open, to the point where he might have opened himself up even more, and he would feel comfortable talking about a subject like revenge."
On whether he took the reins writing the lyrics for Kendrick's part of the track, Bruner was adamant- "Oh no, I would never dare write a fucking song for Kendrick!" he laughed. "That's like asking for Magic Johnson to throw the ball."
