David Coulter brings together Nadine Shah, Sarah Blasko, Lisa O’Neill, Dorian Wood, and Matthew E. White to recreate the iconic album at the National Concert Hall next month.
As part of the National Concert Hall’s Perspectives series, Swordfishtrombones Revisited will see Tom Waits’s 1983 masterpiece interpreted by Nadine Shah, Lisa O’Neill, Dorian Wood, Sarah Blasko and Matthew E. White in a remarkable performance helmed by British multi-instrumentalist David Coulter on October 29.
Tom Waits reinvented himself with experimental outing Swordfishtrombones. For this special performance, David Coulter guides the cast through his delightfully outlandish sonic melee. Coulter, who worked with Waits on The Black Rider and in 2011 revisited his 1985 classic Rain Dogs, brings his unique insight to the event.
The talents of Mercury Prize nominee Nadine Shah, acclaimed folk singer Lisa O’Neill, LA performance artist Dorian Wood, award-winning Australian singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko, and celebrated US musician and composer Matthew E. White combine for this interpretation of Waits’ milestone album, which marked a radical change in musical direction from piano jazz to avant-garde carnival rock.
David Coulter will act as musical director and performer for the show. Over the course of his career, his numerous talents have enhanced projects by The Pogues, Marianne Faithfull, Kronos Quartet, Laurie, Yoko Ono, Hal Willner, and Gorillaz. He has also curated and directed landmark musical performances such as In Dreams - David Lynch Revisited, Discreet + Oblique: The Music of Brian Eno, Monkey: Journey to the West (Gorillaz and Chen Shi-Zheng), Jim Jarmusch Revisited, and Double Fantasy Live.
