"...I'll never forget when I heard the Cranberries and Dolores O'Riordan."
Tori Amos has listed The Cranberries' 'Linger' as one of the songs that has shaped her life – alongside tracks like Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again (Naturally)', Carly Simon's 'Boys in the Trees', Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)', Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car' and more.
In a special feature for Pitchfork, the iconic singer-songwriter – who recently released her new album, Ocean to Ocean – says that 'Linger' was a song she connected to deeply around the age of 30.
"I was touring a lot in the '90s, so I didn't take in as much music," she writes. "But I’ll never forget when I heard the Cranberries and Dolores O’Riordan. That voice and passion combined with the sound of the band—I found it mercurial. There was something there, like liquid metal, that you couldn't hold in your hands."
Amos goes on to note that she had visited Ireland, and then recorded her 1996 album, Boys for Pele, in Co. Wicklow.
"[T]he Irish experience is something that I really treasure," she continues. "You can go to any town in Ireland and there will be people playing either their own music or traditional music in some pub. In every little village, there will be a good Irish band. It’s almost as if the music is in them.
