The single comes ahead of the singer-songwriter's solo effort, which is set to arrive early 2019.
The Veils front man Finn Andrews provides today's Track of the Day with his new single ‘A Shot Through The Heart (Then Down in Flames)' – the latest offering from forthcoming debut solo album, One Piece At A Time, which is scheduled for release in March.
The solo voyage represents an interesting move for the Londoner, who with the band has amassed a respectable back catalogue since signing a record deal at the tender age of 16. Their most recent of their oeuvre - 2016's Total Depravity - was released to widely positive reviews and represented one of the strongest of their five albums to date, while the indie outfit also made an unexpected but novel appearance in the most recent season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks.
The single is a mild sea change from what fans will have been accustomed to from the band, which as is the case with many solo efforts more personal by its nature. Inspired by the end of a relationship, Andrews began working on One Piece At A Time back in New Zealand, where he spent much of his youth.
“It’s a lot more autobiographical than I intended,” Andrews said of the album. “The last Veils records had a lot of writing from other perspectives but this one has a lot less of that and a lot more from… well, from me I guess. It’s always been personal, so it’s a different way of getting at the same thing, I suppose. Honestly I don’t exactly know why it’s different this time, or why these songs have a different feeling, but they do.”
‘A Shot Through The Heart (Then Down in Flames)' is indicative of this. Andrews' emotive, illustrative lyrics are still present, as is the vocal range to match, but it's more introspective and stripped-back production-wise than much of The Veils' work that would be familiar to their wider audience and in particular that of Total Depravity.
