The Cork-based songsmith returns with a glow-in-the-dark single about navigating the agony and the ecstasy of self-transformation.
Cork singer-songwriter Fintan McKahey has unveiled his latest single ‘Higher Place’, which strikes a delicate balance of mesmeric melodies with raw, introspective lyricism. What emerges is a sprawling offering whose mesmeric impact lingers long after the final note.
Featuring fellow Corkonians Eoin Barclay on drums and Kealan Kenny slide guitar, the backing unveils a fitting accompaniment for Fintan’s scintillating vocal performance.
From the very first lines - “We could take it to a higher place / We could sit and watch the fire take / All the memories that I’ve erased” - ‘Higher Place’ sets a reflective, yet wonderfully anthemic tone for the track.
This scintillating tune finds McKahey unburdening himself of old baggage and salting the earth behind him as he embraces the unknown. With this, ‘Higher Place’ ferments a treatise about riding out the highs and lows of self-discovery.

Remaining faithful to the singer’s hazy sound, the track pivots slightly towards Americana and folk rock sensibilities - fusing crystalline soundscapes with an undeniably rhythmic pulse which offer sonic reflections on the tension between escapism and reality. Trading in his lo-fi stylings for something a bit more analogue, McKahey seems determined to flex his sonic muscles in a multitude of genres.
