The song blends genres, creating a uniquely funky distortion-heavy mix
Derry artist Hypnic Jerk has released an eponymous new single. Soaked in distortion, the song is an infectious crossover between funk and psychedelia, that snares the attention of any casual listener with its entirely un-casual nature.
Coupling rapid, funky guitar strumming with a simplistic but distinct drum beat, the song is a groove-heavy genre defier.
Hypnic Jerk is the latest project from Phillip Wallace, who’s responsible for one half of Waldorf and Cannon, as well as a former member of Cashier No. 9.
His vocals and guitar playing are heavily distorted, contrasting his high harmonies with low heavy guitar playing, nestling an echoing chorus comfortably in the middle.
The song name comes from a medical term referring to a sudden jumping sensation which occurs in the body during the transition between wakefulness and sleep.
“I've been experiencing these most nights since I was a teenager, so I thought it would be a good name for a song and band,” said Wallace.

A one-man band, ‘Hypnic Jerk’ is the opening track off Wallace’s upcoming debut album, On The Edge, set to release later this year.
The music video stars Wallace’s alter-alter ego, Snake 'The HiSsSsSs’ Bronson as he interrupts a wrestling match, throws basketballs at children, and ruins a card game.
