The latest offering from the Irish RnB innovator channels a groovy backbeat and silver-tongued flow. Check it out below.
'Spend Some Time' comprises the lead single to Monjola’s latest EP, It’s Not That Deep, which dropped yesterday. The extended play teases out a movement towards openness, understanding and empowerment.
The propulsive track charts this journey across a loose-jointed soundscape. Marching to the beat of its own 808s, the tune channels Outkast’s Stankonia-n sensibilities and sees MJ catching feelings over a stripped-down backing.
Produced by MOIO, MJ’s brother, and Chris Bubenzer, the track is an unrepentant earworm, both snappy and infectious.
Nigerian-born and Dublin-raised, the emerging alt R&B artist takes listeners on a tour of self-exploration and vulnerability, inviting them to join him in opening up about mental health. With MOIO by his side, Monjola leads the charge from their Dublin-based label and creative hub, Chamomile Club. Their mission transcends music; it's about fostering a community where diversity thrives and rising talents are celebrated.
Speaking on the EP, Monjola says: “In this world where things can get complicated very quickly I found myself questioning and overthinking things and scenarios I’ve been in. The project is a journey that takes the audience through my thought process in a diary format. And at the end of that journey what I come to realise is ‘iT’s NoT THaT DeEP’”.
