News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer
Rhythm'n'roots merchants Tupelo can do no wrong. Following on from a support slot to the legendary Booker T, the combo have just finished three shows at The Rose Of Tralee and warmed up the crowd for Damien Dempsey in Whites of Wexford. Most recently, they played with Imelda May at two of her Irish shows.
The band now head out on the road for their own headline dates, which will feature pit-stops at McCarthys Bar in Dingle on September 11, the following night in The Granary Killarney, The Queens Hotel Ennis on September 13 and Vaughans of Clifden on September 19. They also play the Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival on September 24 before two hometown shows in October, Whelans on the 10th and The Village on the 22nd.
Having released an excellent debut long-player earlier this year, Dublin garage merchants The Revellions are bringing their sonic cacophony to the continent in October when they visit Berlin, Bonn, Rennes, Rouen, Paris, Tilburg and Oslo. Best of luck gents!
Fellow Pale residents Epoch Rising just released debut single '10', which got an official launch recently at a raucous show in Crawdaddy. The ER live spectacle also includes thematic visuals from B-Movie, Anime and many other influences to compliment the vigorous performances. Galway's The Coonics just unveiled their debut EP at the Tuam Arts Festival, and it’s currently available at www.downloadmusic.ie/thecoonics. Their track ‘Skinny Jeans’ has received a healthy amount of airplay, and earlier this year they supported fellow Tuam crew The Saw Doctors on their ramble around the domestic circuit.
In other EP news, Kilkenny’s Bobs Your Uncle have just unleashed Tidal Transmissions. The opus was recorded in July in Data Recording Studios in Kerry with engineers Brendan O’Regan and Ross O’Donovan (The Cranberries, Noel Hogan, Royseven, Walter Mitty and the Realists). ‘Papa Don’t Preach No More/Your Lovers Bed’ is the charmingly titled new single from Dublin/Donegal troupe Kaplin. Impressively Leo Pearson (Elvis Costello, U2) was at the production helm for the project. The band, who have supported American Music Club, Gallon Drunk and Devastations, hit the road in support of the release. Check hotpress.com for details.
Monaghan rockers Sanzkrit have made their new single ‘Futila’ available for download in advance of the release of long-player After The Wedding on September 11. There are lots of live shows on the cards, so make sure to check the live guide. Support on the tour comes from The Ambience Affair and Fiach.
Drapery lovers beware on September 21 when The Curtain Thieves invade Whelans. The band recently recorded their debut 4 track EP in Tumbleweed Studios, Dundalk with Derek Turner. With support slots to Brakes, Ham Sandwich and Aslan under their belts, the light-fingered combo are proving to be ones to watch!
Fine purveyors of indie psychedelia The Chakras are gearing up for the release of new single ‘Build Me A Swan’ on September 25, and on the eve of the launch are taking part in the Arthur’s Day celebrations which take over the capital.
Firmly in the ascent since the release of uber-catchy debut single ‘Now We’re Moving Now We’re Free’ – havng already impressed with stellar EPs ‘Eye Spy’ and ‘Oh Dear’ - the very talented Funeral Suits play Baker Place in Limerick on September 21, before skipping across to the UK.
They have dates lined up in in Manchester and London with the equally wonderful Disconnect 4. They and a bevvy of other talented musos feature at this year’s Hard Working Class Heroes Festivlal from October 16-19. Keep that weekend free!
