They've also paid tribute to brother in arms, Hal Willner, who passed away this week
U2 have donated €10 million towards the provision of personal protection equipment (PPE) for frontline healthcare workers in Ireland.
According to RTE, the band are joining forces with Avolon, the Irish aircraft leasing company who've already flown in substantial amounts of PPE equipment from China. Scroll down for details of their Collaborate project.
In other U2 news, the band have paid tribute to Hal Willner, the legendary record producer and music supervisor who passed away on Tuesday. He was 64.
'I'm devastated by this news,' Edge reflects. "Hal was a close friend and one of the greatest music men of all time."
Echoing those sentiments, Bono adds: "What an extraordinary man, what a gigantic soul. And all that music and laughter erupting out of it. A brutal punch in the gut. He was never more needed than the moment he left us."
Over the course of forty plus-years, Willner produced landmark albums by Lou Reed and Marianne Faithful, took care of Saturday Night Live music supervision duties and was behind the all-star Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys album, which included a Bono take on 'A Dying Sailor To His Shipmates'.
We have secured a @Boeing 787 to carry 55 tonnes of #PPE from China to Ireland. The charter cost on a not-for-profit basis is €350,000. That is our target. @PCH_Intl and Avolon will purchase the 55 tonnes of #PPE for frontline @HSELive staff. Donate at: https://t.co/lUnHhnh263 pic.twitter.com/LMmFcTiIQv
