In our celebration of the 40th Anniversary of U2’s first rehearsal in Larry Mullen’s kitchen, here on hotpress.com we are featuring a stream of articles, recollections and opinions about U2, over the 7 days of 'U2 Week’. As part of that extravaganza, for your delight and delectation, we are nominating an obscure U2 track every day!
Holy Joe – 1997 (Discotheque EP)
This is an unusual, almost psychedelic U2 track that seems to have been forgotten ever since it was performed at the first promotional gig for the Pop Mart tour, in a lingerie department of a Kmart in New York.
The riff (Edge nailed it again) and the reverberation effect create a dreamy, multicolored, experimental atmosphere. An enticing tune with ironic lyrics this one has been grievously underestimated. Just like Mysterious Ways, it makes you want to try and belly dance! Enjoy the live version!
Hot Press will continue it's U2 40th Anniversary coverage all week long on hotpress.com, and in a special commemorative issue out Thursday 29th September.
