In our celebration of the 40th Anniversary of U2’s first rehearsal in Larry Mullen’s kitchen, here on hotpress.com we are featuring a stream of articles, recollections and opinions about U2, over the 7 days of 'U2 Week’. As part of that extravaganza, for your delight and delectation, we are nominating an obscure U2 track every day!
No. 2 in a series of 7.
The Ground Beneath Her Feet – 2000 (The Million Dollar Hotel OST)
This track may not be known to the majority of music fans – but a what a gem it is. The song was inspired by – and titled after – Salman Rushdie’s novel of the same name. It is a deeply emotional and poetically intense cut. Included in the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ The Million Dollar Hotel (co-written by Nicholas Klein and Bono), it was co-produced by the familiar duo of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. In the novel, character Ormus Cama writes the lyrics for his lover, Vina Apsara. Bono used these lyrics and turned them into a beautiful nostalgic song with a lovely, wistful melody. Salman Rushdie stars in the video, as of course does Million Dollar Hotel female lead, Milla Jovovich.
