California’s UC Berkeley College will next semester offer its students an unusual option of a course about the pop icon Taylor Swift, who has had an explosive 2023 with her Eras Tour making the star a billionaire.
Next semester UC Berkley will join the likes of NYU and Stanford in offering a course on the American singer songwriter Taylor Swift.
UC Berkley is not the first University to offer a course on Taylor Swift but the first business school to offer its students a chance to study the singer songwriter from a business perspective.
The course is being offered by Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and it will be called "Artistry and Entrepreneurship: Taylor’s Version" and start next spring, Crystal Haryanto told NBC News.
The course syllabus states: “Swift’s ability to connect with listeners is unparalleled. Through lyricism, branding, and craft, we’ll explore how art and authenticity create enduring value and a viable enterprise.”
Crystal Haryanto, an economics graduate, came up with the class and will co-teach with a current student.
“It will be a cross section of literature, economics, business and sociology and I think that we’re studying her impact as an artist, as a whole,” Haryanto told NBC.

The course includes interactive lectures, readings and listening assignments and will last 13 weeks.
From the Beatles to Madonna, there are a myriad of courses offered on pop stars, but one on the business of music after the career spanning Eras Tour made Swift a billionaire is unique.
Swift recently smashed box-office records for biggest opening weekend of any concert film after her Eras Tour concert film was released in mid-October.
Other universities offering courses on Taylor Swift include University of Texas Austin, Berkeley College of Music, New York University, Arizona State University, Stanford University and Ghent University. These courses range from 'Taylor’s Storytelling Through Eras' to ' Taylor Swift Songbook'.
