This right here is what I love about music. Not Kate Nash’s new song ‘Under-Estimate The Girl’ – I find that to be equal parts intoxicating and irritating – but the idea that by doing a musical 180° and going from quirky pop princess to riot gurrrl in less than 18 months, the 24-year-old sparked a global discussion that not even the savviest of musos could have predicted. Written and recorded in 24 hours (god knows why that’s relevant, but it’s what it says in the YouTube tab), ‘Under-Estimate The Girl’ finds Nash sneering, ‘No-one wanna mess, mess with the rules…’ before proceeding to tear the rule book into confetti with a spitting, growling punk diatribe in vein of Hole or Le Tigre.
