Van Morrison and US presidential hopeful George W Bush may seem unlikely bedfellows; not so, according to a recent survey by The Washington Post.
In search of a fresh angle on the campaign, the newspaper quizzed the various candidates on their taste in music, and the Republican front-runner promptly named Van as his favourite artist, and Moondance as his top album. The Texas governer rather let the side down, however, by nominating John Fogerty's Centrefield as favourite song, and proudly pointing out that his campaign doners include 60s crooner Pat Boone.
Democrat Bill Bradley did not respond to the Washington Post s inquiries while John McCain s traditional choices (Favourite act: The Platters, Favourite album: Frank Sinatra s Songs For Swinging Lovers), left the field open for current vice-president Al Gore to try to claim the baby boomers vote.
True to form, Gore put together an immaculate 60s selection including The Beatles Rubber Soul, Dylan s Highway 61 Revisited, and Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country And Western Music . Meanwhile, those who roll up to see the Gore roadshow as it traverses the Land of The Free can shake their thang to the sound of Shania Twain s Rock This Country , his official campaign theme. Cool. For a politician.
