As part of our Venues Special, we’re saluting the Irish stages – in massive arenas, intimate pubs and everywhere in between – that play a vital role in bringing live music to the masses.
From the magical atmosphere of the venues, to the impassioned spirit of the crowds, few, if any, countries do live music quite as brilliantly as Ireland. Whether paying a performer due respect with stunning pin-drop silence, or welcoming an international act with the famed Irish warmth and wit, we all revel in the raw collective energy of a great live show.
It’s for that reason (as well as the powerful, ongoing efforts of promoters and professionals across the sector) that cities, towns and villages throughout this island have become essential stop-off points for touring acts at various stages of their careers – from stars-on-the-rise, to bona fide legends. And thankfully, we’ve got plenty of world-class, state-of-the-art venues to host them in…
Although there are substantial behind-the-scenes challenges facing venues and artists alike right now, the people who work in this industry haven’t been afraid to get creative over these past few years – approaching their spaces and their programmes with innovation and determination, and embracing their crucial role in communities across Ireland.
The likes of Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick and Galway have all been attracting a thrilling selection of major stars and large-scale concerts of late – but it’s just as inspiring to see smaller cities and towns presenting highly sought-after shows all year round. Whether you’re watching some of the most exciting names in Irish music take to the stage at Kilkenny’s Set Theatre, getting up-close-and-personal with a legendary act in Listowel’s Mike The Pies, or witnessing some genre-splicing musical wizardry at Bray’s Mermaid Arts Centre, there are incredible live experiences to be soaked up in every corner of Ireland.
It’s also hugely encouraging to see the opening of newer venues, like Bank Lane in Waterford and The Star Bar in Dublin – as well as the re-opening of Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre as a space for live music once again.

No matter what else changes in the world, there’s no doubt that there will always be a huge appetite for live music in Ireland. That, however, doesn’t mean we should take these iconic venues for granted. Show your support for live music by showing up for the gigs in your local area – or, if you’re feeling inspired by this issue’s Staycation Special, make a road-trip out of it, and visit some unique venues off the well-trodden path.
Ready for the HP recommendations? Here are some of our favourite venues of 2025 – from long-established city-centre institutions, to unforgettable local gems…
