"Our pain as women is not performative... My pain is valid. My pain does not determine my destiny to be alone or to be a wife. My choices to be alone, to explore relationships, or to be a wife does not define my worth or value," Vernon Jane say about the EP's title track 'Wifey'.
Jazz punk outfit Vernon Jane have announced a live show at Dublin's The Button Factory on December 18th to celebrate the release of their new, four-song strong EP Wifey.
The Dublin band will take to the stage with alternative rock group New Secret Weapon - get tickets here.
The gripping tracks on their brand new EP - 'Wifey', 'Origami', 'Fall 4 Me' and 'Baby, I'm Only With You 4 Your Weed' - will feature on their forthcoming album Chestpains And Sidepieces, due out in 2023.
"We tend to like the wounded heroine. The woman who gives everything, the perfect care-giver, the empathic healer, the perfect listener, the perfect lover. The woman who gives everything to everyone and asks for nothing in return," Vernon Jane say of the EP's title track 'Wifey', which explores how it feels to try and be normal after trauma.
This wounded heroine deserves a partner, according to societal standards, they continue. However, "Our pain as women is not performative... My pain is valid. My pain does not determine my destiny to be alone or to be a wife. My choices to be alone, to explore relationships, or to be a wife does not define my worth or value.

"In case anyone missed the memo this is my truth, my journey and my lived experience and everything that we as a band have ever put out has come from a place of authenticity and truth," they say.

'Origami' compares a delicate piece of origami with a person's heart. "Did you ever wonder how terrifying but liberating it would feel to be this tiny little delicate piece of origami? You only have to look at a piece of origami to see you shouldn’t crush it, to crush it would be really cruel... But aren't our hearts and souls a lot like little tiny delicate pieces of origami and we so readily crush each other," Vernon Jane explain.
'Fall 4 Me', on the other hand, is a conversation with yourself about what you deserve and what you truly want from another person, and 'Baby, I’m only with you 4 your weed' deals with the painful emotions that lockdown stirred up in so many of us.
Vernon Jane say about the EP's final, high-energy track: "People leave, love is a lie, God isn’t real, weed makes things better, weed breaks your brain, depression is real, sex is overrated, sexuality is ever changing, change is hard, people die....people die. We’ll never be perfect but distortion eases the bullshit."
Vernon Jane released their debut album The Ritual Of Love Making to widespread acclaim in the spring of 2020 - and featuring discussions of intimacy, vulnerability, aggression and shame. The band's sound is strongly influenced by the likes of QOTSA and Frank Zappa, as well as local Irish acts like Tongue Bundle and New Secret Weapon.
