The Dublin singer-songwriter shares a relatable music video for ‘Uninspired,’ the main single off his recently released EP, Tiny.
Dublin’s own D. Cullen is fresh off the release of his most recent project, the EP Tiny – which is, coincidentally, a tiny collection of short and sweet songs that pack an acoustic pop punch. The lead single ‘Uninspired’ is now joined by a music video, premiering exclusively here on Hot Press and out everywhere tomorrow.
Of the single, D. Cullen shares, “This is a co-write with my wonderful pal Vlado Nosal, a Slovakian pop maestro I met online during the pandemic. We wrote 5 songs together before we’d even met in person! This is a really fun bit of power pop, very reminiscent of Vlado’s work with his groups Hotel Art, Queer Jane and Vlado & The Avedons.”
A melodic, lackadaisical track with a prominent acoustic chord driving it forward, ‘Uninspired’ is epitomical power pop. The music video shows Cullen slumped over a desk as he fiddles with a ukulele, crumples up bits of paper and essentially does anything to get over the writer’s block known intimately by singer-songwriters.
The Tiny EP was released Friday, September 22, composed of 8 tracks and running just 14 minutes in length. Cullen explains the premise behind the release, sharing, “Tiny began as, what the title might suggest, a small idea. I had amassed a collection of 3 or 4 short songs that I absolutely loved, but had absolutely no place on my previous album. It broke my heart that these songs hadn’t found a home, but I couldn’t think of how I’d fit one of these tiny, genre-sprawling songs onto a track listing.”
“Suddenly I became obsessed with the idea of putting all these songs on to one mini EP, with one simple concept; each song had to be under 2 minutes long. That was it. Crazy genre switch-ups? Not a problem! Wildly different lyrical concepts? The more the merrier! Once they were under 2 minutes long, these songs could be anything they wanted to be,” he explains. “It became a daily fixation to find songs at that length. I wrote new ones, I organised co-writing sessions with this concept in mind, I went through stacks and stacks of old demos that I loved and trimmed every ounce of fat off of them until they were less than 120 seconds long. I workshopped song after song until I got these 8 songs that I absolutely loved. 8 songs, 14 minutes, tunes that go from Beatle-esque pop to Disney-esque ballads, from gentlefolk to indie punk, and 1 Tiny EP.”
