Visiting Hours Of A Travelling Circus
Soulful rock inspires mixed reaction
Mojo Fury from Belfast come with a reputation and they seem determined to live up to it. The cover of their album features a man with a hen’s head. They make a big noise. The drums batter, the guitars clang and the singer wails in an anguished but melodic fashion. There is at times a touch of funk in the groove. Everything from Queen (to a lesser degree) to Queens Of The Stone Age (to a greater degree) to The Cure (to an even lesser degree) can be heard in their stoppy-starty grunts and grooves. A times it all feels a bit over-emoted to me. So while I’m partly inclined to just rock out to it, another instinct wants me sit them down with a rich tea biscuit and a cuppa and ask them what’s really on their minds. This is accomplished stuff. But I am not sure where it is all heading.
