We invited a chorus of artists, writers, musicians, broadcasters, sports stars and more to contribute to Now We’re Talking, a mental health campaign, run in partnership with Lyons Tea and Pieta House.
I started to write this piece a few times. Like my songs, while self-expression is often my escape, it can sometimes be the very last thing I really want to do – particularly when I’m in the midst of something that’s challenging my mindset. It’s scary being vulnerable.
The thing is, nobody is immune to the dark days. I think it all comes down to our perspective, and essentially how we cope with what we are faced with. The ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is always there, no matter what you go through; you learn a little more about yourself and ultimately become a stronger, more resilient person.
Of course, this is different for everybody, and dependent on the situation and circumstances – and that’s what makes it hard to distinguish the root cause, and ultimately to heal. We now know we’re meant to talk – and that message is really so important. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. Sometimes what we know, we don’t always do. I’ve faced many challenges, from my teens into my adulthood, which have affected my mental health.
But I know for a fact how bittersweet that is – and that I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them. Time really is a healer, and those experiences bring inner strength, awareness and life lessons. It’s important to remember that life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows – but without the rain, there would be no rainbows.
