Entitled Walk For Me, the first play by acclaimed actor, Kate Stanley Brennan, opens this week at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin.
One of Ireland's leading young actors, Kate Stanley Brennan, will see her first full-length drama, Walk For Me, hit the stage in Dublin this week. Nominated for the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actress in 2009 and Best Supporting Actress in 2010, Kate Stanley Brennan has an extensive list of high profile credits to her name. Her past theatre work includes everything from RIOT to Wuthering Heights while her TV/Film appearances range from RTÉ's Raw and Fair City to HBO's The Tudors.
Now her first play, which opens this week at the Project Arts Centre, combines her acting flair with her musical talent to present a unique coming-of-age story with a rock 'n' roll edge, entitled Walk For Me.
Written and performed by Kate, and directed by Sarah Brennan, the play – which debuted at the Fringe Festival in 2017 – will feature DJ Handsome Paddy on decks and original music from MathMan, Bobofunk and MissKate.
The play follows a young woman's string of sexual encounters, as she attempts to gain a foothold on independence. But her journey of self-exploration is not an easy one. Walk For Me's protagonist, Mary Jane, dreams of becoming a singer, but she is haunted by self-doubt, as a result pushing herself to the extreme as she struggles to free herself from her stifling home life.
"It's a story of self-discovery and survival," we are told, "as she flits from nightclub to nightclub searching for something, eventually ending up in New York on a J1 after dropping out of college. Enticed from Manhattan’s streets by a mysterious stranger, Mary Jane gets sucked into the underground world of New York’s club scene. She gets into some sticky situations as she looks for love in all the wrong places, running through life along the edge of a knife. But she’s on a mission to prove to the world that she can walk alone."
