Novelty songwriter delivers passable debut
This Devon born YouTube sensation is the latest in a long line of young singer-songwriters to have found massive popularity in this country due mainly to initial exposure on Today FM. The album’s title track is already a huge radio hit and the rest of this well-crafted collection follows in a similar vein (and includes some songs from his earlier independently released album Pull of the Moon.)
Though Lawson hasn’t re-invented the wheel in singer-songwriter terms, he has a lot going for him – not least his rugged good looks, a soulful voice and a flair for heartfelt melodies. And with song titles like ‘This Is Love’, ‘The Touch Of Your Hand’ and ‘I’m Gonna Love You’, it’s little surprise that he is particularly popular with females. While most of the songs are on the melancholic side, he ups the tempo a tad on ‘Lucy Rocks’. Granted, with its soaring chorus, ‘The Last Time’ might be a bit too ‘boyband’ for some. But he more than makes up for it with the Dylanesque ‘Darkeness’ and the plaintive ‘North Shore’.
Solid.
