Friday Junior Osemwekhae, who has been involved in the Cork Migrant Centre Youth Initiative Against Racism from the outset, tells us about the new video from Cliff Masheti (pictured) and Athobe.
‘Running’ showcases veteran rapper and The Impressionists' former lead vocalist Cliff Masheti accompanied by Athobe, a young singer. Back in February the youth and mentor duo premiered the song at the Hot Press moderated event titled ‘Douglass’s 19th century to 21st Century Cork’, in collaboration with the Cork Migrant Centre Youth Initiative Against Racism (CMC YIAR) and Douglass Week team.
Cliff was the winner of the 2008 Blastbeat National Battle of the Bands – beating over 100 competitors from around the country to receive the coveted prize of a recording contract. With the experience and wisdom gained from this he engages the youth at CMC YIAR.
"I have learnt a great deal of the power of music and art in getting a message across while working with this initiative and the amount of incredible talented youth that are bursting with inspiration and are just looking for an avenue to express it," Cliff says. "I feel that the youth here have a huge voice that needs to be heard and us as the older generation who have experienced the same prejudice can share this with them and hopefully guide them in the right direction on how to overcome and achieve their goals while dealing with these issues in their everyday life."
Athobe’s rendition of the chorus, "Running away from it all," showcases her gifted voice, which is slowly and surely coming into its own, through her engagement with the CMC YIAR programmes and activities.
