The film will be released in Irish cinemas on July 16, and will stream on Star on Disney+ from July 30.
After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, Onyx Collective and Searchlight Pictures have unveiled a new trailer for Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's Summer Of Soul.
Onyx Collective is a newly launched venture from Disney General Entertainment, designed to curate entertainment from creators of colour and underrepresented voices. Summer Of Soul is the first official project under the brand.
The film marks the Roots musician's debut as a filmmaker, although he did act as music supervisor on Hulu's High Fidelity. Questlove presents a powerful film, part-documentary, part-music film, and part-historical record, centred around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion.
"Over six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park)," a statement says. The footage was never seen, and largely forgotten, until Questlove unearthed it for the film.

Summer Of Soul promises to shine a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being, and stand as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. Streaming Star on Disney+ from July 30 and in select Irish cinemas from July 16, the feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and many more.
